A shared data system for the sector

Social enterprise is a powerful and underused tool that can help create a better future. Having good data and analysis is key to unlocking that potential.

But current data on the Australian social enterprise sector is inconsistent, outdated and fragmented or hidden.

Not knowing enough about the sector’s size, characteristics and impact limits decision-making and support. It holds it back from being seen, valued, and invested in to grow impact.

To help change this, Social Enterprise Australia is building a shared data system for Australian social enterprises.

To start, we have partnered with the Melbourne Social Equity Institute at the University of Melbourne, and the Social Enterprise World Forum. Seed funding from Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation got this started. And multi-year support from Minderoo Foundation powers this field-building work.

This partnership will combine and strengthen data-driven knowledge to build on what’s already being done. It will draw on and share insights and track change over time. It will invite others to join. All data collected will be used only with consent and protected to keep it safe.

A shared data system will help the social enterprise sector to develop, innovate and shift systems. And it will empower policy-makers and funders to unlock social enterprise impact.
